Hip Pain Treatment
Overview

What is joint pain?

Hip pain is one of the most commonly mislabelled complaints. True hip joint pain sits in the groin, while outer hip pain usually comes from the gluteal tendons and bursa, and buttock pain often comes from the spine.

Getting that distinction right is the whole treatment. We separate joint, tendon and referred spinal pain before we treat anything.

Common symptoms

  • Groin pain deep in the joint when turning or rising
  • Sharp outer hip pain when lying on that side
  • Buttock pain that spreads down the thigh
  • Stiffness putting on shoes or socks
  • Limping after a short walk

What causes it

  • Hip osteoarthritis
  • Gluteal tendinopathy and trochanteric bursitis
  • Hip impingement and labral irritation
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Referred pain from the lumbar spine

Two years of being told it was arthritis. It was the tendon on the outside — one guided injection and a strength plan fixed it.

FAQs

Hip Pain Treatment questions, answered

Is my hip pain actually from my back?+
Often, yes. Buttock and rear-thigh pain frequently originates in the lumbar spine, and we test for that first.
Do I need an MRI?+
Not usually. Most hip pain is diagnosed clinically, with ultrasound where guidance helps.
Will I need a hip replacement?+
Only a small minority do. We treat the pain first and refer only if function stays poor.
